Hello all, I am FPTV Station Manager Mike Davies. I am going into my senior year here at Franklin Pierce University and wanted to welcome all of you who are just starting. I, along with the entire FPTV executive board, am very excited to get the ball rolling again for this upcoming fall semester. Over the past few years, FPTV has added numerous shows and has even began filming in high definition! We are ready to continue our momentum and we want you to help!

FPTV offers many different opportunities to get involved. It is up to you whether or not you are up to the task! Also, FPTV will be having a station meeting on Friday September 2nd at noon in the TV studio. All interested in filming should come!

Here are ways you can contribute and who to get in contact with:

FPTV NEWSCAST: The most professional show on FPTV is the FPTV newscast. The newscast films a majority of their show in the studio and requires a lot of crew. The news requires both talent and behind the scenes work. Students can be an anchor, reporter, cameraman, graphics coordinator, and many other positions. The out of studio work is filming packages of events around campus. Those interested can contact Samantha Deabay at deabays@live.franklinpierce.edu or just wait until the station meeting.

Ground Pound, NFL Review Show

SPORTS SHOWS: FPTV’s sports department includes Ravens’ Sports Recap and Ground Pound. Ravens’ Sports Recap is a recap of all Ravens athletics and includes highlights from games. Students can film games on campus or be a camera person in the studio. Ground Pound is a NFL recap and review show. The show is also looking for a third analyst to discuss football. Most of the production is completed in post production, but students interested in editing or filming you should contact Jen Connors at connorsje@live.franklinpierce.edu for more information.

ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS: The entertainment department currently has the most shows, varying from in and out of studio shows. The most popular out of studio show is Kool Kidz. The show is about two college kids who are trying to be cool, but are actually complete losers. The show is always looking for people to help film or act throughout the week. The most popular in studio show is Roommatez, which is a spinoff of the Newlywed Game. Two pairs of roommates are put to the test to see how much they really know about their roommate. The show always brings in a crowd and audiences are encouraged. Anyone can be on the show and it is a guaranteed laugh every show. Another show, Raven Made, is a show dedicated to student work filmed while at FPU. Last year featured short movies and mini television series. This year, the show is looking for more skits that can be about anything. There are also more shows in the works right now including Game Over (video game review show), a countdown review show, and more! Contact James Connelly at connellyj@live.franklinpierce.edu for more details!

The TV Studio in the Fitzwater Center

COMMERCIALS: Another department we have is the commercial department. These commercials are played in between show breaks and can vary from 15 seconds to 1 minute. The commercials are usually for activities around campus or for FPTV shows. We are always looking for new creative commercials, so email Alex Terrill at terrilla@live.franklinpierce.edu with ideas or to find out ways to get involved.

PROGRAMMING: None of the shows filmed would be made possible without the help from our programming department. These people are

in charge of making DVDs of each show and making sure they are played at the right time of day. Anyone interested in helping program should contact Mat Overdeput and Bobby Driscoll at overdeputm@live.franklinpierce.edu and driscollr@live.franklinpierce.edu for more information.

The Control Room

TECHNICAL REPAIR: On certain occasions, our equipment may not work for some reason. People in the technical operations department are responsible for fixing the damaged equipment and to make sure everything is running perfectly. For more information contact Eric Taverna at tavernae@live.franklinpierce.edu.

As you can see, there are a ton of ways of getting involved with FPTV. There are no limits to how many shows or departments you work for! All work done with FPTV is extremely helpful with learning about filming and a great resume builder. Its never too early to get involved with FPTV. Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and check out our YouTube.

FPTV will be outside of the freshman courtyard on move-in day. Come over to our tent, check out our shows and cameras, and get on our emailing list! The station meeting will be on Friday September 2nd at noon in the TV studio. I hope to see you all there!

The wait for water is over

Last modified on 2011-11-02 14:35:44 GMT. 101 comments. Top.

Student workers at Franklin Pierce University can enjoy the delicious taste of “Rindge Tinge” again now that the water has been turned back on.

Executive Producer of Sports Jen Connors discovered the water pipe was repaired when she turned on a sink at Lakeview. The report was confirmed by FPTV25′s Twitter page when Station Manager Mike Davies turned on the sink in the men’s bathroom.

The water was fixed around 2:30pm. When students first turned on the water, the water appeared to be rusty and cloudy. After a few seconds, the water was back to normal.

Hot water did not come back on until 7:30pm. There have been no reported problems yet since the water was turned back on. Students can now shower, cook, wash their hands, and drink with no issues.

The report of the fixed water pipe came an hour after rumors began regarding the addition of portable showers next to the porta potties. Thank goodness that never happened.

No water on campus

Last modified on 2011-08-02 17:51:59 GMT. 105 comments. Top.

In a shocking turn of events, a water line on campus has broken. Because the burst happened to a main line, there is no water currently on the campus of Franklin Pierce University. The cause of the water burst is unknown at the time. Originally, reports said the water would be ready “by dinner time”; however, it has been confirmed that the water main will not be ready until at least tomorrow.

Outside of Northwoods F tower

In the meantime, the university has called a local porta pottie business to deliver some portable bathrooms for students staying at Northwoods during the summer.

Earlier, faculty and staff were told they can go home for the rest of the day. There are students on campus who are here all summer for working, but an email to those students went out saying the water will be back on by dinner time, which was a lie.

Although the temperatures outside are not as hot as they were last week, expecting students to go to the bathroom in porta potties outside during the night is enraging students.

Expect the university to make a statement about the water damage tomorrow.

FPTV executive board moving back on campus August 21st

Last modified on 2011-07-22 18:53:01 GMT. 97 comments. Top.

As a part of the yearly tradition, FPTV’s executive board will be moving into their dorms a week before the rest of the Franklin Pierce University campus. The executive board will spend that Sunday moving in and will then start a full week of meetings the next day. Station Manager Mike Davies confirmed the news yesterday

“I was just waiting for an email back from Dr. Nevious because we had to all be approved by residential life. Once I got the news I told the executive board and now everyone is on the same page,” said Davies.

The group of students returning includes Station Manager Mike Davies, Executive Producer of Entertainment James Connelly, Executive Producer of News Samantha Deabay, Executive Producer of Sports Jen Connors, Executive Producer of Commercials Alex Terrill, Directors of Programming Mat Overdeput and Bobby Driscoll, and Technical Operations Director Eric Taverna.

The executive board returns early in order to prepare for the upcoming year of shows and other business. Some of the items on the schedule include preparations for incoming freshman, creating a new schedule for the fall semester, and other ways to get people involved with FPTV.

“One of the goals I have this year is to bring FPTV to every person on campus. Not only for watching shows, but also publicizing events going on around campus. The television station should be used to broadcast information about clubs or other organizations,” said Davies.

The week of meetings will end with a FPTV executive board photo shoot in the studio. These pictures will be posted on FPTV’s Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking websites. The rest of the campus moves in Sunday August 28th.

2011 Presidency and the Press completes final day

Last modified on 2011-07-21 16:20:06 GMT. 91 comments. Top.

After five days of meetings, interviews, speeches, and media coverage, the Presidency and the Press completed its final day of events. This year’s group consisted of 27 students either currently attending high schools or about to attend a college or university.

Students came from around the country, from as close as Peterborough, New Hampshire all the way from Florida and Kansas. A group of the students, five of whom are Fitzwater Scholars, are enrolled at Franklin Pierce University for this coming Fall. The students stayed in Cheshire Hall during their time here but were in the Fitzwater Center working on projects most of the time.

Interview with Rick Santorum

Their time at Presidency and the Press included a meeting with former US Senator Rick Santorum, classes with Professor Paul Bush, a visit to Mitt Romney’s New Hampshire campaign center, and trips to the Manchester campus where they were able to meet Marlin Fitzwater himself. The students interviewed Marlin and made packages and stories about their experience.

On the last day of the Presidency and the Press, students were given certificates handed out by President Birge for their hard work. They were also shown a video compilation of all the work they have done for the past five days.

The Presidency of the Press is a yearly event intended for high school students interested in journalism and press. According to the Presidency and the Press website, “This conference reaches out to our nation’s high school media. In one short five day span, we will introduce some of the country’s most engaged youth to the dynamics of presidential election politics, the role of the media who cover it, and the relationship between the two. Every speaker, every tour, every interview is designed to give these young people the skills and information they need for full participation in the Presidential Election.”

Three cows spotted on FPU Rindge campus

Students and faculty are use to walking around geese on their way to class. Imagine walking by a cow! In a strange turn of events, three cows escaped from a local farm and made their way onto the Franklin Pierce University campus Monday morning.  Junior Samantha Deabay was one of the first people to see a roaming cow.

“I was working at the Presidency of the Press and I went outside for 15 minutes. As I was walking out of the Fitzwater Center I opened the door and looked to left to see a brown cow staring at me,” said Deabay. “I didn’t beleive it. It kept moving towards me so I went back inside.”

Fitzwater Center grad assistant Jason Raft made the heroic phone call to campus safety stressing that this wasnt a prank phone call. All three were found and brought back safely to the farm before Sodexo got their hands on them.

These cows are just another bizarre animals to come across campus. Other animals seen around campus include turkeys, pheasants, moose, and skunks.

After Shwayze and Cisco Adler performed at Franklin Pierce University on April 2, 2011, FPTV was able to catch up with the performers.  Erica Tomaszewski conducted the interview and enjoyed her experience.

“It was very exciting to be able to interview them because the guys seemed down to earth,” said Tomaszewski.

According to the interview, Shwayze should be releasing another album by the end on April.  If PAC gets another artist or band for next year, expect FPTV to cover the event

Sundance Film Festival: Day 1-4

By Jen Connors

Park City, Utah. 2,358 miles and two time zones from Rindge, New Hampshire. Forty-five minutes from Salt Lake City. Native population: 7371. Population for the last week of January: questionable, but up by a few thousands at least. This week, seven Franklin Pierce students are part of those thousands of people attending the Sundance Film Festival as part of a class. The seven person class consists of Meghan Graf, Ben Friedman, Kevin Murphy, Liz Squire, Steve Yuen, Aaron West and myself, with Blake Wood as our professor. Over the course of the next several days, we will watch about eighteen films apiece, some with looming release dates (Cedar Rapids) and others gaining notice for the first time (To.get.her).

After picking up our tickets and divvying them out over a late breakfast/early lunch, we decided to go explore the area. The area around Main Street, where two Sundance theaters and the Slamdance Film Festival are located, houses most of the restaurants, bars and stores in Park City. Main Street also doubles as a showcase for numerous musicians trying to get their name out by playing on the street. The musicians have all been incredibly talented so far, with acts ranging from a pianist to guitarists to full bands. We have taken to referring to various statues as our landmarks, from a cow in front of an ice cream store to a bear near the box office and a moose down the street from our condo. Situated in a valley surrounded by ski mountains, the area itself is absolutely gorgeous.

For our first night here, we had dinner at Zoom, a restaurant owned by Sundance founder Robert Redford. While Redford is often known to make an appearance the first night of the festival, he wasn’t there during our meal. The director of Howl, Rob Epstein, was leaving as we were sitting down. The food was excellent and very filling. After dinner, we went to the opening night party at the Legacy Lodge. Sadly no celebrity sightings but we got a decent amount of swag and had a lot of fun.

Celebrities seem to be flying under the radar, yesterday at least. Steve and Kevin saw Anton Yelchin and are about 70% sure they spotted Kim Kardashian when they went to Main Street for lunch today. Meg, Ben and I saw Liv Tyler as we waited in line for The Ledge,  and Ben and Aaron saw Michael Moore speak at a panel about culture and social change with Bobby Kennedy Jr, as well as Harry Belafonte. According to Steve, Anton was with his mom and was, “freaking out about steak,” and that Kim was “with a bunch of rich-looking, attractive women.” Aaron and Ben saw Ryan Seacrest after a panel that Michael Moore was heading. Zoom, which is usually full of movie stars on the first night of the festival, was missing its celeb clientele and its owner, Robert Redford. We’re currently all hoping that the stars come out of hiding for at least one day before we leave.

So far we have seen four movies. We all saw a shorts program as a group to start off the day, which included the star-studded Fight For Your Right Revisited, a parody of what happened to the Beastie Boys following the 1987 video shoot for “Fight For Your Right.” Fight starred Seth Rogan, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride as the band in 1987 and Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly as an older version. I personally thought that the short was funny, but maybe a little over the top: the credits listed forty film and television stars in cameos. Next, I saw The Ledge with Ben and Meg (the rest of the group caught a showing this morning) while Kevin, Liz and Steve saw Bellflower. Steve and Kevin could not stop singing the film’s praises, with Kevin stating, “it took a love story and turned it on its head. It was one of the most original movies I’ve seen in a while.” Steve goes on with, “the acting is some of the most sincere I’ve seen. The characters were basically playing themselves.” The Ledge, a thriller starring Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson and Terrance Howard, was powerfully written and acted, with twists that could have changed the outcome of the story several times before the film’s harrowing climax. We have three movies scheduled for tonight and eight for tomorrow. Between now and Wednesday morning, we each have about eighteen films to see. Updates will follow as we get out of films.

Like a Little at Franklin Pierce

Likealittle.com has been getting a lot of action from Franklin Pierce students these past few weeks. Hundreds of anonymous flirts have been posted since the website came to Franklin Pierce on November 18th. By November 20th, the site was receiving over 20 posts per hour. Created by a Stanford Business graduate student, the website has only been around since October, but since then it has become a phenomenon on college campuses. The site has sections for campuses in 40 of the states and an International section for overseas campuses.

According to the website, Like a Little is a “flirting-facilitator platform”. The site allows students to post and chat about their crushes while staying completely anonymous. Any student can create a post on Like a Little and instead of the student’s name being associated with the post, it will be the name of a random fruit. Anyone can comment on the post or send a private message, including that special someone the student wrote it for.

Here are some of our favorite Like a Little posts:

Roots of Creation playing free show at FPU

For the first time in over 4 years, the self described “Reggae/Rock Dubtronica Hybrid” band, Roots of Creation, will be playing a free show for the Franklin Pierce Community. On Friday November 19th, the band will be performing in Pierce Hall at 7:00 pm.

Roots of Creation consists of three Franklin Pierce alumni: Singer/Guitarist Brett Wilson, Tal Pearson on Keyboards, and drummer Mike Chadinha. The band is currently touring with bassist Brandon Downs and guitarist Jay McGuinness.

The band has toured the country, opening for such bands as Lupe Fiasco and The Wailers. Since graduating from FP, the band has put out four albums, most recently “ROC Live Vol.2″. The album captures the band in their element, a live setting. Performances from the album include the best of their live recordings from 2009 and 2010, including songs like their hit single “Policy” and covers of Talking Heads and Tom Petty classics.

“We started out playing parties in the trailers,” said singer Wilson. The band will transform Pierce Hall with their full stage and unique musical approach. For more information, and how to download their music, visit the bands website here. Don’t forget to see the band play live in Pierce Hall this Friday at 7 pm.

Paranormal Activities Increase [Updated]

Last modified on 2010-09-30 22:49:47 GMT. 396 comments. Top.

FPTV has now joined with the Pierce Arrow to jointly cover the developing story of Paranormal Activity 2. Over the last few days 8 envelopes containing flash drives have been distributed to different entertainment websites including Entertainment Weekly and Bloody-Disgusting.com, the contents of the flash drives appearing to be promotional material for the upcoming movie Paranormal Activity 2. The strangest part is that none of these envelopes were ever mailed but contain the return address reading “40 University Drive, Rindge, NH 03461″ which is the address of Franklin Pierce University’s Rindge campus.

FPTV’s station manager Nick Caramico is heading the joint initiative, with help from fptv25.com reporter Eric Taverna. The Pierce Arrow has received phone calls and emails from someone claiming to be from Paramount Pictures. The emails are described as being from an employee of Paramount Pictures’ “Interactive Marketing Department”. FPTV has verified the department to actually exist within Paramount, but no link between the sender of the email and the department can be made at this time.

Caramico was able to get a brief interview with Patricia Garrity, Franklin Pierce University Marketing and Communications Director. Garrity was puzzled by the inquiry she received earlier in the day but realized that her email had been overrun by people sending links of the Bloody-Disgusting.com article. “The College used to offer a Paranormal Sciences major,” said Garrity, “but that has not been offered in several years. It still turns up in searches from time to time.” Garrity also noted that several FPU graduates have moved to California and have worked with Paramount Pictures. Students and Professors attending an event Wednesday night were also surprised by the news. Garrity is looking into the matter from the University’s stand point and said she would attempt to get in contact from someone from Paramount.

Stay tuned to the site for any updates about this developing story and look for an article in the next edition of the Pierce Arrow.

UPDATE: FPTV has left messages with different departments of Paramount Pictures in regards to this matter. Everyone we did speak with from Paramount either did not know about the story or were unable to comment on it.

UPDATE: There is currently the advertisement pictured below on the home page of the Pierce Arrow’s website that just adds to the mystery surrounding Paranormal Activity 2. The advertisement only links to the email address displayed. We now are learning that this is the only ad currently shown on the site, regardless of location, country, or browser. More information as we get it.

Women’s Studies Raise Homeless Awareness

Franklin Pierce Professor Andrea Bergstrom organized a Homeless Awareness Sleepout on the softball field of the University’s Rindge Campus Tuesday Night. Over 20 students and faculty participated in the demonstration from 6:00 pm Tuesday night until 6:00 am Wednesday morning. Students from the Women in Leadership program brought out their sleeping bags and snacks for the experience. Bergstrom had her classes fill out Budget Worksheets to show how difficult it is for a single woman to live on her own. “Most of the people who are homeless in rural areas are women and children,” said Bergstrom.

Nick Caramico was able to speak to Professor Bergstrom about the sleepout.

Paranormal Activity 2 at Franklin Pierce?

Last modified on 2010-09-29 20:15:26 GMT. 387 comments. Top.

As of this writing, we have yet to find an explanation of this, but according to bloody-disgusting.com, a flash drive was mailed to them containing a brief video in the style of the film Paranormal Activity. This video is allegedly a viral video made to promote the upcoming sequel and has many clues hidden within, from the strange file name to the timecode at the bottom. In the middle of the video, visible for only a single frame, is a demon or ghost that causes a woman to drop the camera. The rest of the footage shows a baby walking in a living room.

The strangest thing about this whole thing is that Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the flash drive was left at the door in an envelope with no postage and a return address reading “40 University Drive, Rindge NH, 03461″, which is obviously the address of the Rindge campus of Franklin Pierce University. Strange, huh? We will update this post if more information becomes available.

UPDATE: We have now learned there are at least 7 videos that have been distributed to various websites including Entertainment Weekly. All these videos feature the same baby in different locations. What is most strange about all of this, none of the envelopes containing the flash drives had postage, meaning none were mailed. All however, had Franklin Pierce University’s address listed as the return address. Why would something that was never mailed include a return address. This shows that the address was clearly included on purpose.

UPDATE: According to a source of ours, someone claiming to be from Paramount Pictures repeatedly called campus safety a few days ago wanting to talk to campus media about the situation.

In the meantime, check out the clip below. Warning: it is creepy.

There are now 8 videos known. They can be found here.

Station Manager’s Message to Freshmen

Last modified on 2010-09-01 16:59:42 GMT. 271 comments. Top.

by Nick Caramico, FPTV Station Manager

Beginning college is definitely an interesting, fun, and once in a lifetime experience. It may not be the easiest thing to get used to, but in time, you will find your place on this campus. I know that I certainly have found mine.

I am from northern New Jersey, 15 minutes away from New York City. Coming to Franklin Pierce for me was a huge geographical shock. Things weren’t open 24/7, there are more trees and geese than buildings or people, and I had to pump my own gas. For some of you, there may not be that much getting used to, but there is always that initial time to adjust to a new way of life.

This University’s Television station helped my adjustment become a lot smoother than I anticipated.

My first week on campus I attended the full station meeting. Never having really worked with camera equipment, and certainly never editing a video, I admit it was a lot to take in, but I knew it was what I wanted to do.

Within the first month of my freshman year, I had helped crew on every entertainment show, assisted in filming a commercial for the Bubble, and even was a contestant on Roommatez. My interest in this field grew very quickly, and before long I was editing videos on my own and coming up to the station at night for a few hours to help film shows.

My sophomore year I produced two programs. The Boot and College Feud. I was Executive Producer of Commercials, and filmed unique commercials for clubs and shows. Junior year, I created the position of Online Director and expanded the stations presence outside the campus. I covered the 2009 MTVU Woodie Awards and produced the first daily show in which the station covered the 2010 Winter Olympics.

My history at this station is not unlike others before. Hard work, commitment, and of course fun go into making this station what it has evolved into.

I would like to invite any incoming freshman that is even mildly interested in television production to come to our full station meeting, September 3rd at 1:00 pm. There are so many opportunities here in the Fitzwater Center and we are truly a very welcoming family. I spend a lot of time with my current Executive Board and I am confident that this year will be a very successful one for this station.

Please don’t be intimidated to approach anyone on my staff, as they have all been in the same position you may be in. We welcome new ideas that may improve the station as we continue to grow.

This University may be small, but I know that I have received more hands on experience in this field than I would have gotten at a larger institution. I tell you my story so you can see all the opportunity that this station, the Pierce Media Group, the Fitzwater Center, and Franklin Pierce University has to offer.

So please, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and visit this website. If you are not interested in being a part of the station, please watch channel 25 in your dorm rooms and see all the hard work your friends and peers are putting in. Thank You and stay tuned to all the big things to come.

Things All Freshmen Should Know That You’ll Never Hear On Tour

Last modified on 2010-08-26 16:01:21 GMT. 138 comments. Top.

There’s always a lot of information given on tours of campus, but like everything, there is certain information withheld from prospective students. This is a list of things I learned during my freshman year that was never mentioned on tour.
